Your local ADHD assessment options in Bristol
In Bristol, NHS Right to Choose referrals are still being accepted for people registered with the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) ICB, but the ICB has asked providers to work within an agreed funding limit. That means you can join the waiting list, but your assessment may be delayed beyond advertised wait times once the limit is reached, with no confirmed date. On the standard NHS pathway, waits commonly run to several years. A private assessment gives people in Bristol a faster, predictable route to being seen.

Clinics vary in what they include, and the difference is rarely obvious from a price. These are the stages a thorough assessment covers, and the instruments a CQC-registered clinic should be able to name when you ask.
Screening
ASRS v1.1A short, validated self-report questionnaire. The ASRS v1.1 was developed with the World Health Organization. Screening indicates whether a full assessment is likely to be worthwhile. It is self-completed and is not a diagnosis, a triage decision, or a clinical opinion.
Pre-assessment history
Clinics gather developmental history before the appointment — school reports, and where possible an account from a parent, partner or someone who knew you as a child. ADHD and autism are lifelong, so evidence that traits were present in childhood matters to the diagnostic criteria.
Diagnostic interview
DIVA-5 · QbTestThe assessment itself: a structured clinical interview lasting roughly 60–90 minutes, conducted by a psychiatrist or specialist practitioner. DIVA-5 is the standard structured interview for adult ADHD. Some clinics add an objective computerised measure such as QbTest or MOXO, which records attention and movement against a control group.
Report and outcome
NICE NG87A written diagnostic report setting out what was assessed, the outcome against DSM-5 or ICD-11 criteria, and recommendations. NICE guideline NG87 governs ADHD diagnosis and management in the UK, and a report written to it is what a GP will expect to see.
After a diagnosis
Titration · shared careIf medication is recommended, titration is the supervised period — usually several weeks — of adjusting dose and monitoring response, heart rate and blood pressure. Ongoing prescribing often depends on a shared care agreement between the clinic and your GP. Whether a GP enters one is at their discretion and at their ICB’s, and it is never guaranteed. Ask any clinic what happens if your GP declines, before you book.
ThinkBetter is a marketplace, not a clinical service. The assessment is carried out by the independent clinic you choose, and any diagnosis is theirs to make.

- Named clinical reviewer. Our clinical content is reviewed by a Consultant Psychiatrist on the GMC Specialist Register — not anonymous.
- MDT support and supervision. Matched clinics work to recognised UK quality standards (such as UKAAN/CAAQAS), with multidisciplinary input and clinical supervision.
- NICE-compliant, GP-ready reports. Assessments produce a thorough, NICE-compliant report designed to be GP-ready. Whether a GP offers shared care is at their discretion — we never guarantee acceptance, and we would be wary of anyone who does.
